FairCom developers’ tuning allows complex transaction to run in one unit
Global enterprises turn to FairCom for their mission critical database tasks, such as routing credit card transactions. Because of this, FairCom places a high priority on all areas of performance. If a customer requires uniquely faster performance for a business need, FairCom doesn’t push it back on the customer by telling it to tune its queries. This is just one story of FairCom working hand-in-hand with the customer to achieve three times faster performance:
The customer, a prominent financial organization, ran a single transaction that updated many millions of rows. The customer called the FairCom team and talked directly to the actual developers of the database. A very large transaction naturally takes time, but the customer wanted it to complete sooner. To increase speed, FairCom could have told the customer to break the transaction into smaller chunks, but the customer needed to run the transaction as one unit.
The engineers profiled the transaction, and brainstormed how this could be achieved. In a few days, they modified the c-treeACE Database to allow up to 128 TB of in-memory temporary files. They made this value configurable and changeable at run time.
In addition, the FairCom engineers changed a hash function to distribute temporary data more efficiently and improved record locking. In short order, they delivered a new, custom database build back to the customer that ran three times faster.
The customer tested the same transaction against PostgreSQL and found the database must be taken offline periodically for a significant amount of time to “clean up” the data. c-treeACE performs the entire transaction (and every transaction) without ever needing to “clean up”. Unlike most databases, c-treeACE automatically reuses disk space and tunes its indexes.
